Leafs game photos

It’s always interesting when the Maple Leafs come to town as Coach Babcock and Coach Peters are close friends. The Leafs and Hurricanes also have some of the best rookies on their teams this year; Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner and William Nylander (Leafs), and Sebastian Aho (Canes).

The Leafs will probably make the playoffs this year with the Canes having to wait until next year. Both teams wanted to demonstrate their talents on the ice, which led to a solid and spirited hockey game. Even though the Canes led Toronto twice in the game, it went into overtime. In the early minutes of OT, the Canes had a few chances to put the puck behind Curtis McElhinney, but they failed to get fresh legs on the ice. Canes’ Victor Rask lost the puck to Matthews, giving possession to Morgan Reilly, who scored the game winning goal.

Photos from the game were provided by the CanSouth sports correspondent and event photographer.

Flames game photos

Sunday’s game opened with Eddie Lack getting his second start, a reward for his play in Friday night’s shutout. The Hurricanes outworked the Flames (all four lines) but couldn’t get the puck in the net. On the other hand, it took only one good line from the Flames to get the job done. While the Canes started out fast and scored in the first period, the Flames applied the pressure in the second scoring twice and another in the third off a deflection. Johnny Gaudreau was dynamic on Sunday, scoring twice and adding an assist for the Flames win, raising them into playoff position in the Western Conference. Goalie Brian Elliott was strong in net, allowing only a power-play goal from Victor Rask.

Senators game photos

Friday’s 3-0 shutout win was special for Eddie Lack, Hurricanes goalie, as it ended a five game losing streak. Lack missed a lot of the season due to injuries and worked hard to return to game level. The Senators couldn’t handle the surge from the Canes in the first period and could not respond to the second period goals. While the game attendance was light, the crowd was enthusiastic and in a good mood for the weekend.

The evening was dedicated to “Hockey is for Everyone”, an NHL initiative with local LGBTQ organizations attending and some Hurricane players used pride tape on their sticks during the warmups. Lack (volunteer ambassador for the team) tweeted: “This was a night I’ll never forget. I’d like to dedicate this shutout to love, equality and togetherness.”

Leafs game photos

The CanSouth sports correspondent reports the Leafs played a strong 4-0 game against the Hurricanes. Auston Matthews scored an amazing second effort goal while being hooked to the ice on a breakaway.  Connor Brown scored twice, Jake Gardiner added a goal and two assists, James van Riemsdyk had two assists and Curtis McElhinney made 37 saves for the Maple Leafs to earn his first shutout since January 2014.

The win advanced Toronto into the last playoff position in the East. The Canes were never in the game. Cam Ward was pulled half way through the third and replaced by Eddie Lack. This loss makes it extremely difficult for Carolina to make the playoffs this year.
