It’s always interesting when the Maple Leafs come to town as Coach Babcock and Coach Peters are close friends. The Leafs and Hurricanes also have some of the best rookies on their teams this year; Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner and William Nylander (Leafs), and Sebastian Aho (Canes).
The Leafs will probably make the playoffs this year with the Canes having to wait until next year. Both teams wanted to demonstrate their talents on the ice, which led to a solid and spirited hockey game. Even though the Canes led Toronto twice in the game, it went into overtime. In the early minutes of OT, the Canes had a few chances to put the puck behind Curtis McElhinney, but they failed to get fresh legs on the ice. Canes’ Victor Rask lost the puck to Matthews, giving possession to Morgan Reilly, who scored the game winning goal.

Sunday’s game opened with Eddie Lack getting his second start, a reward for his play in Friday night’s shutout. The Hurricanes outworked the Flames (all four lines) but couldn’t get the puck in the net. On the other hand, it took only one good line from the Flames to get the job done. While the Canes started out fast and scored in the first period, the Flames applied the pressure in the second scoring twice and another in the third off a deflection. Johnny Gaudreau was dynamic on Sunday, scoring twice and adding an assist for the Flames win, raising them into playoff position in the Western Conference. Goalie Brian Elliott was strong in net, allowing only a power-play goal from Victor Rask.
